Food porn?

Guess what caught our eye on this packaging from New York confectioner MarieBelle? That’s right – the glitter. The images here won’t pick it up to full effect, but each of these chocolate bar sleeves includes sparkly flashes of glitz that add to their mischievous appeal.

As lovers of retro art, we’re also pleased that the illustrations pay heartfelt homage to the master of pin-up art, Alberto Vargas. So, far from soft porn, this packaging is an affectionate pastiche of the popular and highly acclaimed ‘Vargas Girl’ paintings. Surely this gives the playfully risqué imagery acceptability – even in today’s climate of over-zealous political correctness? For some, a glimpse of stocking top is an innocent reminder of the burlesque amusement popular in a less uptight time. Others are likely to interpret it as salacious sexism that has no place anywhere, let alone on confectionery wrappers.

Hats off to MarieBelle for throwing caution and prudish attitudes to the wind. Their packaging for this cheeky chocolate range is merely a perky parody created with a nod (and a wink) to flirtatious fun.

We love it.
